I don't know how you do it in Mathematica, but you can do it in SAS
using the REG procedure.

The SAS/STAT Users Guide, Vol. 2, gives a rough overview of the
methods in the discussion of REG, but you'll want to find a good text
on multiple regression techniques or statistical modelling to get more
detailed algorithms.  Sorry, I don't know the name of such a text off
the top of my head, but the on-line MIT library catalog could probably
help you out.
