MSUG - Mathematical Software Users' Group

PURPOSE:

This announcement is the first periodic posting of the msug mailing
list. The purpose of this list is to provide a forum for discussion
  amongst users of mathematical software.

Complex problems require creative solution techniques, and often the
most powerful tools are mathematical ones. Over time, the MIT
community has been provided with a growing number of increasingly
sophisticated mathematical software packages to assist in its problem-
  solving and educational efforts.

Providing these computational resources presents somewhat of a support
conundrum: to assist a user with a problem, you need an understanding
both of the particular software package under consideration, and of the
mathematics of the problem itself. In recognition of this situation,
Academic Computing Services has started the "Mathematical Software User's
Group." The objective of this group is to provide a forum for users from
various disciplines to share their perspectives on both the mathematical
and the computational aspects of problem-solving.

ADDING AND DELETING SUBSCRIPTIONS:

Interested parties can subscribe to the "msug" mailing list by sending
email to "msug-request@mit.edu" asking to be added to the list. Please
specify the email address you wish the list to send articles to. If no
address is specified, articles will be send to the "Reply-to" or "From"
address in the mail header of your request.

Requests for deletion from the list should also be sent by email to
  "msug-request@mit.edu".

For users of the MIT Athena computing environment only:

Athena users can add or delete their subscription to the "msug" list
by using the "blanche" or "listmaint" programs. The list is archived
in the "msug" discuss meeting, but all "msug" articles (except for
requests to be added or deleted from the mailing list) should sent by
email directly to the "msug" list, not entered in the discuss meeting.

Note that no affiliation with MIT is required in order to belong to the
users' group. Anbody with an email address and an interest in the use
of mathematical software is welcome to participate.

POSTING AND RESPONDING TO POSTINGS:

You can post articles to the list by sending email to "msug@mit.edu".
Your posting will then be automatically forwarded to the other members
  of the list.

Note that if you **REPLY** to postings from other members, your email
will only go to the original poster, **NOT** to the list. If you wish
your response to go to the list, you need to either email your response
directly to the list or add the list to your "cc" line. As an example,
here is a mail header for a message that would send a response to me and
  to the list itself:

	To: reidmp@mit.edu
	Cc: msug@mit.edu
Subject: Re: Using Mathematica to solve O.D.E's
	--------

If you have any questions about using electronic mail, you should probably
contact the computer support staff at your site.
