[MIT ONLY]
A new version of Macsyma (419) has been donated to MIT by Macsyma,
Inc. and is now available on Athena Suns. To access it, do:
add macsym; macsyma
at the Athena prompt (note that the locker name is "macsym", not
"macsyma", due to a naming conflict with a locker containing a much
older, obsolete Macsyma version).
Macsyma can also be run in TTY mode over dialup (if you can connect to
a Sun, which are not standard Athena dialup servers) if you start it
by typing:
macsyma dumb
instead of macsyma; the graphics features will not be available but
everything else should work. To exit Macsyma, type "quit();" from
within Macsyma. There is extensive on-line help that is accessible in
either the X or TTY modes.
If you are running directly on a workstation you may see an error
message about an "invalid icon bitmap" if you use the Mwm window
manager, when you start Macsyma. This seems to be harmless and
hopefully won't cause problems.
I have a set of manuals in my office (E40-398, phone 253-8613) in case
someone needs to look up anything complicated.
If you find problems that appear installation related, you can contact me
directly. Bugs should be reported via sendbug on Athena.
