The second beta release of Zephyr 2.0 is now available on
athena-dist.mit.edu. To retrieve it, FTP to athena-dist.mit.edu and
get the file pub/ATHENA/zephyr/dist/zephyr-2.0-beta2.tar.gz. Please
send comments about the second beta release to zephyr-bugs@mit.edu.
I didn't expect to make a second beta release before the final 2.0
release, but there were enough problems with the first beta release to
justify a second one.
Most of the changes made since the first beta are minor portability
problems, installation problems, and other packaging issues. I have
also fixed an inherently portability problem relating to how the
Zephyr library converts binary data to ASCII data.
Three memory corruption bugs and two memory leaks have been fixed in
the Zephyr server since the first beta release. The server has now
been tested under "small site" load at two sites running on different
platforms, and I've also tested it (not under load) using Purify. I
am reasonably sure that the server is stable at this point.
The host manager's retransmit times are now 2-2-4-4-8, so it only
takes twenty seconds to notice that a server is down.
