PC won't boot after applying SP3

Hi folks,
I have been applying SP3 to my win2k machines this week without any
problem until now. One of my machines won't boot, it says the following
file is missing or currupted: c:\winnt\system32\config\SYSTEMced
Here the steps that I have tried that have not worked:
I tried to boot into safe mode
I tried last known good configuration
I booted from the CD and used the emerency repair facility
I booted from the CD and started the recovery console. The "system"
file is there. I tried to copy that file from a similar machine (after
the service pack was successfully applied), but I can't copy the files
in Windows because it's in use, and I get an access denied message when
I boot the second machine into recovery console and try to copy from
there. I tried renaming the system file and then rebooting to see if it
would recreate itself, but that didn't work either. Finally, I renamed
a file called system.sav to system, but still no luck. The machine
belongs to an engineer, and he has fancy video card in it, which is
likely the cause of the problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions (0ther than hooking the drive up as a
slave to get the data off and then wiping the drive and starting over?)
