Hello,

I am pleased to announce that the Windows 2000 Server Domains
Discovery project completed its work on August 9, 2002. The team has
submitted its recommendations in a report which is posted to the
project notebook at http://web.mit.edu/is/discovery/win2k-server.

Over time, IS customers have been asking for more detailed guidance
on the implementation and support of Windows 2000 Server Domains and
such interest is anticipated to increase as the end of Microsoft's
official support for Windows NT Server nears. The focus of the team's
work was to understand the desirability and impact of four possible
Windows 2000 Server deployment scenarios:

     * Allow and enable departments to create local Windows 2000
domains and/or forests.
     * Enable departments to create Windows 2000 workgroups and deploy
servers within a workgroup.
     * Allow and enable the migration of the WIN.MIT.EDU domain to a
forest design that would enable departments to a have a departmental
Win2000 domain that would be a member of the forest.
     * Enable departments to add Windows 2000 servers to the existing
campus wide WIN.MIT.EDU Windows 2000 Domain.

The interests of both departmental customers, students, and MIT's
infrastructure were considered including the following:
- what level of Windows 2000 server domain functionality is desired
by departments
- specific assistance, documentation, or services that IS should
provide that would be helpful to DLC customers in performing Windows
2000 Server Domain migrations or new installations.
- identification of any impacts to MIT's IT infrastructure that might
result if the recommendations of the team are implemented
- identification of any added resource demands to IS teams that might
result if the recommendations of the team are implemented

I would like to thank the project sponsor, Theresa Regan, for her
continued support of this project. I would also like to thank the
Discovery team leaders, Steve Dowdy and Mohammad Sharari, and project
team members, Nate Charles, Tom Coveney, Al Essa, Paul Hill, Kerem
Limon, Don Nelson, and Mike Sherman for their considerable efforts.

The team plans to conduct a Town Meeting to discuss the
recommendations with the community on August 20, 2002 in W11 (Main
dining room) from 11:30-2:00 PM. If you would like to attend please
RSVP to sharari@mit.edu.

If you have any questions about this completed Discovery Project
please feel free to contact me, hallisey@mit.edu or the team at
win2k-server@mit.edu.

Thank you.
