error dialog popup about "unknown USB device" on Win2K

Hi,
I've started having an odd, intermittent error dialog popup at random
times on my Sony VAIO Z505LSK laptop running Win2K Service Pack 1. The
title of the dialog is "USB Hub Current Limit Exceeded". Inside, it
says "An unknown device has exceeded the current limits of its hub port".
There is a graphic of a USB device tree with an alleged "Unknown USB Device"
two levels below the top:
USB Root Hub (2 ports) -> Generic USB Hub (3 ports) -> Unknown USB Device
Double clicking on "Unknown USB Device" doesn't bring up any information.
Clicking either Reset or Close on the dialog makes it go away for a second,
then it comes right back. Rebooting does delete it, but it comes back later
after some random number of hours (usually 2-6 or so).
I looked through the USB devices in the Device Manager section of the
System control panel for this and everything looks normal- it doesn't
show up when I expand the tree below Universal Serial Bus controllers.
However, when I double click the "Generic USB Hub" node of this tree
and look at the Power tab of the Properties window that opens, it does
show up, again as "Unknown USB device" with Power required
"unknown". The "General" Tab for "Generic USB Hub" and all other USB
nodes says "This device is working properly".
The strange thing about this is that I don't have any USB devices
connected at all (except for possibly the keyboard if it's USB- I'm not
sure), nor have I used any since the computer was last rebooted. My
card slot is empty and has also not been used.
If anyone knows what this is about and how to get rid of it I'd much
appreciate hearing from you.
