Re: Netscape 6
Netscape Communications Corporation recently released Netscape 6. Based on
the initial results of the Netscape Release Team's testing, Netscape 6 is
NOT ready for use at MIT and is not supported at this time. The testing
found numerous bugs on both the Windows and Macintosh clients. We will
continue to test new releases of Netscape and will keep the community
informed about support for future Netscape 6 releases.
The following are some of the significant problems found in preliminary
tests by release team members and taken from the Netscape 6 Release Notes:
-- At this time, new MIT personal certificates cannot be obtained through
Netscape 6.
-- Netscape 6 on Windows picks up existing certificates; it does not on the
Macintosh.
-- When adding helper applications and specifying a new MIME type, a bug
may cause Netscape 6 to freeze.
-- Systems with ATI Rage video cards, such as Dell OptiPlex and Macintosh
G4, may not redraw pages properly after resizing the window.
-- If True Type fonts are used with Netscape 6, some characters display as
squares.
-- Netscape 6 may not adjust to changes in the bit depth settings (number
of colors) on a monitor.
-- Mousewheel scrolling doesn't work on the Macintosh, and there are
problems with it on Windows.
-- Cannot save a page as text.
-- On the Macintosh, Page Setup is grayed out.
-- No warning is given for pages with a mix of secure and non-secure elements.
-- Cannot download multiple files at once using FTP.
-- Cannot download multiple email attachments at once with IMAP.
Although the user interface change in Netscape 6 is significant, it did not
contribute to our decision to not support this version. The new interface
will require relearning on the part of current Netscape users.
For example, on the Macintosh, to display a context menu, Netscape 6
follows the Macintosh standard of Control-click; with previous Netscape
versions it was click and hold.
