Last month, Microsoft released Windows Me, the latest in the Windows 9x
series of operating systems. Information about this product can be found
on Microsoft's web pages at http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsMe/.
Upcoming Support Statement
-------------------------------------------
Today is the 30th day since Microsoft released Windows Me and we continue
to test this newest operating system in the MIT environment. Until we are
ready to provide a more detailed support statement, we will continue to
provide best-effort support on getting machines connected to and working
with MITnet. If you need assistance, please contact the Computing Helpdesk
<computing-help@mit.edu> or the RCCs <http://rcc.mit.edu/>.
We are in the process of writing documentation for configuring the network
and dialup settings.
Known Issues
--------------------
The current Kerberos installation (mink-10-18-99.exe) reports a
winsock2.dll error during setup. Our tests have shown that the
installation still works after the error. A newer release of Kerberos is
underway and tests have shown no problems with Windows Me.
Upgrading to Windows Me takes about 2 hours and is prone to crashing. In
several test cases, upgrading took just under 2 hours and crashed multiple
times during the process. The upgrade continued successfully after
rebooting and when finished, has not crashed.
System Requirements
--------------------------------
Windows Me requires
- Pentium 150MHz processor or better
- 32MB of RAM or better
- 480MB to 645MB free hard-disk space
Information Systems will recommend a better minimum standard when we
announce support for Windows Me.

----------------------------------
