Good Morning!
On behalf of the Software Release Team, I would like to thank you for
attending the first of many breakfasts sponsored by the team. Your
questions and suggestions were quite helpful and we appreciate you taking
the time to be there. The team relies on your feedback and ideas, so keep
them coming.
We plan to conduct frequent breakfast updates in order to talk about the
work of the team, preview future releases, and hear your feedback. We hope
you will join us for our next breakfast and will send out information as it

1. I do not see a list of caveat's on the website and was suggested to be
an asset to the end user:
- this is a good suggestion. We are currently working on several
different ways to implement this.
2. A suggestion that new releases be classified as:
- new software from outside vendor
- new software developed at MIT
- new installers written at MIT
It was confusing that Bettertelnet was just a new installer written at MIT;
not a new version of the application.
3. Someone asked why the Netscape 4.74 announcement did not include
information pertaining to IMAP?
- Jon asked if it would have been more useful if it was included in the
announcement. The audience was told that we wanted to discourage the
community in configuring other versions of Netscape such as 4.04 and 4.5
for IMAP. The correct configurations are included in the current version
of Netscape.
4. Do we have a fast track policy (e.g. a security fix):
- Ginny used tn3270 as an example that admissions was using and not
working properly. SWR was able to turn it around quickly (in a few days).
We prioritize on the urgency of the matter extensively as this is an
important matter.
5. Who is responsible for distribution venue?
Jon answered we are and that this happens at the time of release and get
distributed to:
- net-dist and certificate based access
It would be more useful if patches and updates for supported products were
available on net-dist.
The Eudora patches will be put up shortly.
6. The process review seems to be for Mac and PC not Athena. Is this true?
- yes, the original scope was targeted toward the MIT's MAC and PC desktop
environment.
From an outside view, this would be seen as SWR of IS. What is the
relationship between the development groups and IS?
- SWR is developing the guidelines
- SWR ties up any loose ends
- SWR works with the development groups
7. A suggestion that our pages link to product development for in-house
developed software.
- this link will be included in the product notebooks.
8. Are there any thoughts given to Athena supported products that are now
MIT supported like Matlab?
- we are not currently looking at providing support for Matlab at this
time but may be in the future.
- if there are others, let the team know.
9. There is not a central place to let the community know of site licensed
software that exists.
- we have heard the request and have passed this onto those who can work
on it.
10. A question on roles: Are you looking for people (Inst. Writers) that
already do this kind of work?
- no, a willingness to learn
- some programming experience would be helpful.
11. Where in the process does it say "here are our recommended, supported
versions of windows?
- product support summary sheets
- product notebook
SWR will also include these statements in their announcements stating for
example: " this won't work on Windows ME". With each product release, we
will include a list of known issues.
12. Any thoughts to bring Kerberos and Eudora to work w/OS X?
- Mac development is currently working on this.
13. For software being anticipated to release, does the team have any
discussions with the vendors addressing MIT issues?
- in talking business applications:
- COEUS
- BrioQuery
- SAP
- Adonis
We work with vendors when we can. The go/no go decision (e.g. SAP) are MIT
business decisions and our outside of SWR's scope.
