I have used it in the past to do exactly what you are talking about.

VNC allows for you to view and control another desktop.  You can also set
it up so that you can only view the other desktop.  If you run it over ssh
you can control the other desktop securely so that passwords and such are
not sent over the network in the clear.

There is NO support provided by IS for this solution.  I do not know of a
Microsoft product that does this, but that does not mean one does not exist.
