Sharing CD-ROM's on Windows NT Server

Hello,
I have a question for the group regarding sharing CD-ROM's under Windows
NT.

Currently, we have a server running Netware v4.1 and we use a Microtest
Discport with a seven CD-ROM SCSI tower to share about three CD's as
Netware volumes. The Discport device attaches directly to the CD-ROM
tower and the network. NLM's loaded on server communicate with the device
over the network and allows the mounting and dismounting of CD's as Netware
volumes. Once mounted, drive letters can be assigned and rights granted
just like other volumes.

The Microtest home page seems to suggest that the Discport (being the
bottom of their product line) only supports Novell. The Discport XL and
Discport Pro models apparently do support Windows NT.

Okay, now here is the question:

With Windows NT Server, can't I just attach the seven CD-ROM tower directly
to the Windows NT machine, (which has an adaptec SCSI adapter) and share
the CD-ROM's without having to to use the Discport device at all? If I did
it, it would be on a member server, not a PDC or BDC. Would this setup
degrade performance? It seems like this should be theoretically possible,
but is is practical?
