Filemaker won't start

Something will not allow Filemaker to start on my machine. It works on
other machines just fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Filemaker 5.5
and Filemaker 6 on my machine.
When I click on the Icon or the executable, I get a second or two of
hourglass, and then nothing. I can't start it from the command line either.
No error messages are generated either. I suspect something has been
written into the registry.
I did have a Filemaker plugin which I did not like, and I never registered
it. Could it have had an accidental 'poison pill'?
