News Release 4/30/96
MEDICAL STUDENT TO SPEAK ON MAD COW DISEASE
On May 8, 1996 Michael Greger (617-321-9684 <mgreger@opal.tufts.edu>)
will give a talk entitled "The Public Health Implications of Mad Cow
Disease" at 4:00 PM in the Sackler A auditorium at the Tufts medical
school 136 Harrison Ave, Boston. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Michael Greger says "Dubbed mad cow disease by the British press, bovine
spongiform encephalopathy has claimed the lives of over 150,000 cattle.
It may also have placed Britain on the brink of the largest public health
disaster since the Black Death with worst case scenarios involving the
horrific deaths of tens of millions of people." Recent deaths among
young people in Britain linked to the disease in cows have brought this
issue world attention. Greger will talk about the situation in England,
but will focus on the United States where some scientists believe a
strain of BSE already exists. He will also discuss how both governments
continue to protect corporate interests at the expense of public
welfare.

Michael Greger is a first-year medical student at Tufts. He graduated
last year from Cornell's Agriculture College in biological sciences and
has been interested in the subject for a number of years.
