These two briefs were in one clari.news.briefs message for today:

----
        Clinton Boosts Beef Prices
At the same time the administration is moving to push down
gasoline prices, President Clinton today took steps to end the
decline of beef prices. The president ordered the government to
buy up to $50 million of beef to bolster low prices and give
ranchers a cheap source of feed for their herds. To aid cattle
producers, the White House said it would speed up purchases of
beef for the coming school year and allow farmers to cut hay and
graze livestock on Conservation Reserve land. Cattle prices are
at their lowest level in a decade.

        Study Links Red Meat, Cancer
A new medical study appears to establish a strong link
between the consumption of red meat and a certain type of
cancer. University of Iowa researchers performed the study on
35,156 Iowa women aged 55 to 69 with no prior history of cancer.
They say those whose diet was rich in red meat faced an
increased risk of lymph node cancer, perhaps because absorbing
the fat and protein in the meat overworks their immune systems.
One researcher says eating red meat, especially hamburger, was
associated with the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The
National Cattlemen's Association criticized the study.
----

I encourage everyone to write to the Whitehouse
(president@whitehouse.gov) and show your objection to the
subsidy of Cattle slaughter with our tax dollars and public
land.
