Hi! Planning for the 2nd annual MIT Great American Meatout
festivities are underway. The Meatout will take place on
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20. Here are our current plans:
-contact MIT Medical about sponsoring us/helping to promote
the Meatout;
-working with MIT Food Services to have a campus-wide vegetarian
day (details TBA)
-sponsorship by Laverde's, Harvest Co-op, Bread and Circus, and
possibly others;
-Thistle issue to come out on the same day as the Meatout which
will cover all of the relevant issues: politics of nutrition,
factory farming, meat and the environment, McLibel trial,
overview of scientific studies on nutrition, vegan movement,
resources for vegetarians, and book reviews.
-FREE vegetarian Indian dinner courtesy of the Iskcon Temple of Greater
Boston;
-showing of the video "Diet for a New America" and potluck
...and there is more to come!!
If you would like to help out with the event in any way, send email. This
is truly an event the MIT community can rally around. Finally, here is a
chance to get out the word that a vegetarian diet is health-promoting and
life giving, as well as environmentally conscious and economically sound.
We received tremendous support last year from MIT Medical and MIT Food
Services and expect that they will be as enthusiastic this year. What we need
is YOUR participation. Please send email if you would be willing to help. Tasks
asked of volunteers will be small and manageable, with the realization that
*we are all very busy.* All volunteers will be greatly appreciated and rewarded
with free food!!!
Here are some wild & crazy ideas that we had, in no particular order:
-close down Burger King for a day
-having a registered dietician present at our booth on the day
of the event
-lots of free food samples, including donated food from various veg-oriented
food companies (???)
-mass mailing to all professors and administrators about the event
-an article in _The Tech_ about the event
-advertisement of the Meatout on WMBR radio station
-an article about us in the Boston Globe ???
-LSC slide advertising the Meatout
-chance at a dinner for two to Country Life to anyone who obtains pledges of
friends or co-workers
If you would like to see all or any of the above happen, GET INVOLVED NOW!!!
Your psyched veg-pres,
Laura
