Our recent Vegetarian Support Group meeting was on Wednesday October 18 in the
SCC coffeehouse. Eight members attended.
Topics: meeting times; Boston Food Fair; IAP classes; the Simpsons
screening; upcoming booth; recent booth.
-Meeting times
We now have a regular meeting time for VSG! We will meet Thursdays at 5pm,
biweekly. Our first such meeting will be Thursday, October 26 at Baker
Dining. We have been offered a discount for meeting attendees, which Matt
will check up on. There are vegan entrees at Baker every Tuesday and Thursday.
Of course, people are not obliged to buy food at Baker, and can bring their
own. Contact <vsg-officers@mit.edu>
-Boston Food Fair
the Vegetarian Resource Center is planning a vegetarian food fair for the
greater Boston area, modeled after the wildly successful Toronto Vegetarian
Food Fair. Laura is looking into the possibility of hosting the fair at MIT.
It will take place next March. If we do host it, our primary responsibility
will be to act as a liason between the organizers and the MIT office reserving
the site. Johnson rink is one possible location. MIT is nicely situated in
the Boston area for such an event. Contact Laura <elsiedee@mit.edu>
-IAP classes
The deadline for IAP class descriptions is October 27th. We currently have
three ideas: a vegetarian cooking class, in conjunction with Food Services
(who have agreed to supply facilities and even perhaps chefs); a presentation
discussing current research in nutrition; and a showing of the video "Diet for
a New America." Send mail to <vsg-action@mit.edu> if you would like to help
organize.
other IAP event ideas discussed were events in conjunction with MIT
hunger-action, MIT Save (environmental concerns), and Food Not Bombs.
-the Simpsons screening
Room 1-390 has video equipment and is quite nice, so we will attempt to
reserve that room. Matt <krom@media.mit.edu> will solicit preferred showing
times from the vsg-local list. We can publicize this and might have a
substantial turnout? Contact <vsg-action@mit.edu>
-Upcoming Booth
We decided that "Vegetarians and athletics" or ("vegetarian athletes") will be
the topic of the upcoming booth. Thursday November 2nd is our desired date,
pending Lobby 10 or Student Center availability. (Since the meeting, we have
found that Lobby 10 is not available and we may reschedule) We will produce a
web document in parallel, sort of a "virtual booth." Contact
<vsg-action@mit.edu>
-Recent booth
Laura's pictures came back! This was our first meeting since the World Farm
Animals Day and World Vegetarian Day booth, and the overall feeling is that it
was successful (and fun).
Next meeting: Thursday, October 26, 5pm, Baker Dining.
