Dear all -
I'd like to know more about vegetarianism and calcium balance. I was
having an argument / discussion with a friend (like me, she is a
veggie and a scientist) who said that vegetarian diets increased the
risk of osteoporosis due to the lower intake of calcium and vitamin
D. I disagreed, stating many of the points from a recent mail on
this list. She quoted some evidence from literature to back her side
up, so we were both left with the same point of view as we started
with. Who is right?
It was stated in the mailing on this list that in countries where
vegetarian diets are common, there is less osteoporosis. I think
that this "fact" is laughable in terms of its
epidemiological value, but I am interested in any more information
that might back up my argument.
If we are at risk of low calcium, where are we to get it from if
dairy and eggs are so desperately unhealthy?
Yours
