Hi there! And welcome to MIT!
It's a great time to be a vegetarian at MIT. Food services has begun
to offer a lot more vegetarian options, so now you should be able to
get healthful veggie options at all locations on campus. Also, our
group is more active than ever, with over 200 members! Look for
dinners, trips, and potlucks throughout the year. Also, we are quite
excited about the possibility of several informational booths
throughout the year, to show the MIT community what a healthy and
environmentally friendly way of life vegetarianism is!
I think you'll find that there are really a lot of vegetarians at MIT.
I come from Missouri, where vegetarians are few and far between. It
was really nice to find out that my roommate for R/O week was also a
vegetarian! Since then I have met many, many vegetarians here. Take
advantage of the fact that there are so many veggies around, get to
know people, come to meetings and dinners, and get involved. In the
spring we will be holding the second annual Great American Meatout,
modeled after the Great American Smokeout, where people (even
meat-eaters!) pledge to give up meat for a day, in order to explore a
more healthful, less-violent way of living. There are more and more
people going vegetarian all the time.
Being a vegetarian is the most healthful thing you can do for your
body. If you have any lingering doubts about nutritional issues, don't
worry! You will find that there is really nothing to be concerned
about - not protein, iron, calcium, or any of the other things you
might have heard about. Starting in about a week, we will be sending
out nutritional information so that you can educate yourself about the
issues.
The MIT Vegetarian Support Group is a resource, for both seasoned and
aspiring vegetarians. If you have any questions, please feel free to
post to the vsg@mit list and there is usually someone who can answer
your question. Also, we want to provide the opportunity for you to get
to know other vegetarians, and to get involved in the issues, if that
is what you are interested in.
Welcome aboard!
