This is a reply to a rather old message (cleaning out my mailfiles :-)
About Christophers: I'm vegan and I have had numerous bad experiences with
Christophers (every one of the last 6 times I have been there, there have
been dairy products in my food even after I specifically asked what the
items contained and requested non-dairy items. also, the service tends to
be slow, food often arrives cold, and it's not terribly tasty either!) I
gave up going there after the last time when I ordered, they lost my order,
then I ordered again, then it took an hour to be delivered to me, and had
cheese in it, and when I asked to have something else, they told me the
kitchen was closed and I ended up with no dinner... even my waiter at the
time commented, "They do this all the time"!
Boca Grande is better, but their rice is also cooked in chicken broth (the
servers will usually tell you that it is NOT, but it IS) and they have an
unfortunate tendency of being sloppy when they dish out the meat, allowing
globs of meat or fat to fall in the beans. I have also been served burritos
containing cheese or chicken by mistake.
I have two recommendations for good vegan/vegetarian Mexican food, at good
prices, served by people who can reliably tell you what ingredients go into
the food:
1. PICANTE, at two locations: Davis Square and Central Square. Their rice
and beans are vegan. Veggie soft tacos are vegan (grilled veggies,
salad greens, and guacamole on soft corn tortillas). Several burritos
are vegetarian, I recommend the "burrito de papas" which has beans, rice
veggies, potatoes, and is very yummy. Ordered without cheese, it is
vegan. Many other delicious choices for lacto-vegetarians. The only
drawback is that neither Picante branch really has the atmosphere of
a place like Border Cafe or Christophers.
2. RUDY'S, past Davis Square (is that Teele Square where it is?) Very
accomodating for vegetarians/vegans. The food isn't as interesting as
Picante, but Rudy's is more of a "hangout" with a cosy atmosphere.
