Sources:
FEEDSTUFFS, 2/20/95: National Livestock & Meat Board finding that 3% of
U.S. are "meat avoiders," 2% are vegetarians; of the vegetarians, just
under half are strict vegetarians (vegans).
Vegetarian Resource Group, 1994: Roper poll done for VRG reportedly found
that 7% of women are vegetarians, along with 5% of men. 700,000 Americans
in all are vegans. 9% of liberals are vegetarian; 5% of conservatives. 10%
of westerners don't eat red meat; 4% of Southerners. Overall average is 6%,
with Midwest and East apparently right on the norm.
MEAT PROCESSING, 11/94: Land-O-Lakes survey found that 56.8% of Americans
eat 2 or more meatless suppers a week. 20% eat four or more.
