On Thursday 23rd February, 30 vegetarian activists from the
Anti-MuckDonald's Alliance staged a sit-in at a major high street
branch of McDonalds in Manchester. The protesters, including
Reggie the Veggie, the juggling vegetarian clown and an evil, chainsaw
weilding Ronald entered carrying banners, leaflets and food which was
handed out to customers.
Management staff physically prevented the press from taking photographs inside.
Most customers were happy to read and talk about the "What's Wrong With
McDonalds" leaflet though one took exception to the prescence of the campaigners,
throwing a Big Mac at Reggie.
After negotiating with the police it was agreed that the
campaigners wouldleave at 5:00pm, an hour after they arrived at the junk
food emporium. Spokesperson Darren Johnson said: "We are offering
McDonald's management, staff and customers a tasty and nutritious
alternative to expensive, bland and unhealthy junk food."
On leaving campaigners were surprised to discover four police riot vans
and two mounted police outside. This over reaction is typical - in the
past police have forcibly removed and beaten protesters and have
turned a blind eye to assaults carried out by McDonald's management.
One man was arrested for public order offences, but he was not one
of the demonstrators. Police continued to guard the store for several
hours afterwards.
The aim of the protest was to draw attention to the clearing of
rainforest land to raise cattle, excessive packaging and for selling
a product which causes heart disease and cancer and also to draw
atention to the McLibel trial. Protester Richard Simpson said:
"McDonalds are always censoring their critics. They use archaic libel
laws to shut people like us up. The legal costs of a libel case are so
huge that most people would go bankrupt before even reaching trial.
It's a perfect example of the rich threatening the poor."
All members of staff at the Manchester McDonald's declined to comment
on any of the allegations brought by the protesters. Manchester staff
are told during training that critiscism of the company, such as
the felling of rainforests, are false. Later a spokesman said: "We
are sorry out customers were inconvenienced"
