I just thought I'd mention that there was a very interesting article
about meat eating and religion in the Vegetarian Times a while back.  For one 
thing, it mentioned that all the trouble in preparing meat and keeping Kosher 
in Judaism may have been intended to make it clear that you are taking the 
life of an animal and that it should be a bit more of a deal than popping open
a cellophane container.  

I can (probably) dig the article up if anyone is interested.
