It's easy to establish that the U.S. imports beef from nations such as Costa
Rica where former rainforest is used for pasture, but once that beef gets
into the U.S., it gets mixed up with domestic production, and there's no
way to tell who buys it, for what purpose. The common assumption is that
because fast food restaurants are the biggest beef purchasers, they're
purchasing a lot of the rain forest beef, but so far as I know, the exact
linkage has not been definitively proven. It is an issue, incidently, in
the McLibel trial over in Britain, transcripts of which have been regularly
posted on AR-news. I've saved them, but not in transmittable form.
