True: We all get really tired of being asked the question "So why are you
a vegetarian?" Especially those of us who use college dining services,
and sit very often with different people every meal. I'm certainly tired
of going through my spiel with people every time i sit down with someone
who hasn't had my "why i'm a vegetarian" speech. Perhaps it's living in a
meat-and-potatoes part of the country, i don't know. Vegetarian
population is depressingly low here.
But anyway, back to my point. Blair Walker addressed (sp.?) an issue that
i feel a need to respond to. He wrote of getting joked at for being a
vegetarian, and why don't people joke at others for not eating broccoli,
etc.
It's not unusual not to like broccoli (it's my favorite vegetable, BTW).
Not eating meat, however, is in many parts of the country.
Also, it's a lot easier to take such jokes if you yourself don't take
your vegetarianism seriously. No, i'm not just a health-veggie, i'm an
ethical-veggie as well, but i take myself lightly enough that i can say
"Hm, that's a fine looking meatloaf you've got there," or "try the
chicken, he cooked it very well tonight," when they know i'm veggie. I
hate even the look & smell of the stuff, the thought of eating it or
finding it good-tasting makes me want to perform a disgusting bodily
function (:->). But if the people i eat with know that i can laugh at
myself, they don't bother to joke at my expense.
