*** UC BERKELEY DORMS GO VEGAN ***
The ASUC Student Advocate Office (SAO) in coordination with
Students in Support of Animals (SISA), The Coalition of Students for
Healthy Dorm Food (CSHDF), and The Vegan News, has succeeded in working
with University Housing and Dinning Services to secure a vegan entree at
every meal in its dining halls. For the first time ever, students will be
guaranteed the right to choose meals completely free of animal products.
UC Berkeley is the first major public university to provide a vegan entree
at every meal.
The decision to include the vegan option was made in response to
the large demand for vegan food. A petition circulated by SISA and CSHDF
was signed by 1200 of the 4000 dorm residents. Additionally, as printed
in the Oakland Tribune, a survey conducted by Housing and Dinning Services
indicated that 5% of the dorm residents are vegan.
In response to the high demand, Nancy Jurich, Assistant Director
of Dining Services, has begun implementing many new vegan recipes. Dining
Services plans to kick-off the healthy menu plans with a special all-vegan
theme meal on January 12th.
Ori Brafman, President of Students in Support of Animals, said:
RThis new step will not only benefit the health of students but also the
lives of animals and the quality of the environment we all share. This is
a huge victory for all of us.S
Mark Schlosberg, Chief of Staff of the ASUC Student Advocate
Office, said: RIt is really good to see students and the university
working together. This bold new step will empower all students living in
the dorms by providing them with a choice to eat an animal-free, health-
conscious meal.S
