As of this morning, 70 black bears in New Jersey have been killed in
a DEP authorized "cull" to kill 500, which came into effect today.
Most were simply ambling through the forest or eating berries.
Here is a wonderful account of one of the brave hunter's who faced
down a terrorizing beast:
>Matthew Porter, 28, of Butler said he was sitting in the woods in
>the Newark watershed, "just having a cup of coffee," when a bear
>walked toward him. When the bear was about 100 yards away, he picked
>up his gun and "shot it in the lungs."
>
>"I'm still shaking, but it's pretty wild," Porter said several hours
>later, as he waited for biologists to check his catch. It was an
>adult female, 145 pounds.
Lynda Smith of www.savenjbears.com makes a correlation between a New
Jersey developer who is in the DEP's pocket and this sudden reversal
of policy. Those buying million dollar homes certainly don't want
pesky black bears in their area. Developers have been regularly
"entertained" by the department of environmental protection.
>One important link between NJ's bear hunt and developers is a Centex
>housing project that falls squarely within the bear hunt zone.
>Sixty-six estate homes, ranging in price from $839,000 to nearly
>$1,000,000, are, according to www.centexhomes.com, in the "plan to
>build" stage.
Please call the NJ governor's office TODAY to express you outrage.
These bears were nearly wiped out not long ago, and non-lethal
methods for "control" are readily available.
609 292 6000 and ask for him Mr.James Mcgreevy
An article from the NJStar-Ledger
(http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/index.ssf?/base/news-12/1070951802123020.xml)
gives a bunch of quotes from various Government whores and brave
hunters. This is such an ENRAGING bunch of bullshit. Example:
""These are the bears that are not sustaining themselves on fruits
and nuts; the snow covered that up and these guys are still out
eating," said Larry Herrighty, chief of wildlife management for the
state Department of Environmental Protection.
This comment comes on the heels of one hunter's proud kill of a
"non-sustained " 600 pound male.
And this was Lynda Smith's reaction:
>Lynda Smith, a founder of the BEAR Group who campaigned tirelessly
>against the bear hunt for more than three years, quietly wept:
>"Before, this was a theoretical fight (but) today bears are dying."
