Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)
Nutrition Researcher and Adjunct Associate
Professor of Medicine at George Washington
University School of Medicine
Author of eight books on nutrition. His breakthrough
diabetes research study was profiled in Newsweek January 20, 2003.

FREE ADMISSION -- ALL WELCOME

Dr. Barnard will speak on the topic of his new book:

Breaking the Food Seduction:
The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings --
And 7 Steps to End Them Naturally

Many people recognize that chocolate, sugary foods, and
caffeine-containing foods can be addictive. But research suggests that the same
is
true of more foods than previously thought, including cheese and meat.
Cheese contains high levels of casein, a protein that breaks apart
during digestion to produce morphine-like opiate molecules, called
casomorphins. Biologically, these opiates are responsible for part of the
mother-infant bond that occurs during nursing.
One feature that all these foods—sugar, chocolate, cheese, and
meat—have in common is that scientists can block much of their appeal with
drugs designed to counter the effects of narcotics, suggesting that the
pleasurable aspects of these foods depend on the release of opiates within
the brain.
However, Dr. Barnard recommends dietary and lifestyle adjustments, not
medications, for dealing with food addictions. "Unhealthy foods are
everywhere, and we use some special tricks to keep them from being
overwhelming." Dr. Barnard will offer seven self-defense tips. His book
(Hardcover $24.95) will be available for signing. Please bring cash (exact
change appreciated) or check. No charge cards.
