The Center for Ethics and the Professions invites applications for
Faculty Fellowships in Ethics 2003-2004
Purpose
The University Center for Ethics and the Professions encourages teaching and research about ethical issues in the professions and public life. Its resident Faculty Fellowships support outstanding teachers and scholars who wish to develop their ability to address questions of moral choice in such areas as business, education, government, law, medicine, and public policy.
Activities
Fellows participate in the weekly seminar of the Center, which discusses problems of teaching and research in ethics. They enjoy access to a wide range of activities in all of the professional schools at Harvard, as well as the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including opportunities to participate in courses, colloquia, curricular development, collaborative research, study groups, casewriting workshops, and clinical programs. A significant part of their time is devoted to conducting their own research in ethics.
Eligibility
Fellows are selected by a University committee of Harvard faculty members representing several of the professional schools and Harvard College.
Applicants are judged on the quality of their achievements in their field of specialization and their ability to benefit from work in the Center; the contributions they are likely to make in the future in higher education through teaching and writing about ethical issues; and the probable significance of their proposed research and its relevance to the purposes of the Center. Applicants should hold a doctorate in philosophy, political theory, theology or related disciplines; or a professional degree in business, education, public policy, law, or medicine. Preference will be given to applicants at an early stage of their careers, normally no more than ten years from the terminal degree in their field.
The Faculty Fellowships are open to all, regardless of citizenship.
Stipends and Conditions
Faculty on leave from a college or university receive a stipend to cover a portion of their academic-year salary; their home institution is expected to provide at least half of their salary, plus all benefits. Stipends for overseas Fellows and those without regular academic appointments, or any other source of income, vary in accordance with individual circumstances. Fellows are provided with an office, library privileges, and a research allowance. They are expected to devote full-time to the activities of the Center during the period of the Fellowship (September through June).
How to apply
Please submit to the Director of the Center:
1. Application Cover Sheet (available online)
2. Letter describing your interest in ethics and plans for using the Fellowship year (approximately 500 words)
3. Curriculum Vitae
4. Proposal for the research project you would undertake (approximately 1,000 words)
5. Scholarly paper in English, preferably written or published within the past two years.
6. The names and addresses of two persons who have agreed to write letters of reference.
The applicant should ask the referees to send the letters directly to the
Center, for the attention of the Committee.
