Hi all,
I had heard that vitamin B-12 was present only in animal-derived foods, and
that if you were vegan you had to supplement B-12. So that, if I still ate
cheese and milk I wouldn't have to supplement, but if I gave up those foods I
would. But I got the following post - any comments on it?

	Laura

P.S. Is it true that sugar is processed using charred animal bones?

Vegetable sources of Vitamin B-12 are:

tempeh (fermented soybean product) Level: 1.5 to 14.8 mcg. per 100 grams

natto, miso (fermented soy product) Level: .17 mcg. per 100 grams

Some shoyu-tamari sauces Level: 0 to 10 mcg. per 100 grams

Nutritional yeast (fortified with B-12) Level: 50 mcg. per 100 grams

Kombu & wakame (sea vegetables) Level: 0 to 29 mcg. per 100 grams

Chlorella and Spirulina are also sources of Vitamin B-12.

The daily requirement for Vitamin B-12 is less than one millionth of a gram.
The human body can store Vit. B-12 for between 3 to 8 years.

(above info courtesy "The McDougall Plan", by Dr. John McDougall.)

If you are a strict vegan, (for 3 years or more), be sure to eat foods
containing Vitamin B-12 regularly. Better yet, take a vegan supplement to be
sure. And if you still have doubts, you can have your B-12 level checked.

I've heard that CHEERIOS (R) (in the USA) is fortified with B-12 and that
the source is NON-ANIMAL derived. But I think the cereal contains sugar, and
since sugar is filtered thru CHARRED ANIMAL BONES, does that mean that a
VEGAN wouldn't eat it? (I've been meaning to ask everyone's opinion on
sugar, btw)

Bob
