one could also argue for plants.
plants are "aware" of what is around them.
(like the classic example of phototropism)
they can "sense" the seasons and day/night through chemical responses.
there are some plants (venus fly trap.. althought i don;t think you would eat 
it) that depend on their chemical senses for survival.

as to pain..
there is something call the ghost leaf affect...
When people lose their limbs, sometimes they feel an itch or some pain in that
limb, althought it is not there..
in the same way, the plant will operate like it still has the leaf attached (i
have no idea how they measure this)
and plants are living things.
we can injure them and we can make them "bleed"..
they have stages of development and embryos.
i don't know if it is right to kill them...
im a veg for health reasons.
but these are some of the arguments i;ve heard.
