Anybody who is familiar with Thai cooking knows that they often add
fish sauce to just about everything. However, Thai restaurants are
traditionally veg-friendly, often with an entire (perish the thought!)
vegetarian section on the menu. My question to anyone with insight is
this: how likely is it that something labeled "vegetarian" on the menu
secretly includes fish sauce? (I picture a Folger's commercial: "We
secretly replaced their coffee with our own special blend of fish
sauce.") My boyfriend (also vegetarian) spent 2 months in Thailand and
said that they considered something with fish sauce to be vegetarian.
Most (virtually all) meals are cooked with meat, though it serves as
flavoring for them, rather than a main course.
For anyone who has not experienced the scrumptiousness of Thai
vegetarian eating, it is truly a delectable experience. Anything with
curry and coconut milk is tops. I visited the King & I restaurant
(Charles T stop) last weekend and had a dish called "Vegetables,
Vegetables" which sounded, looked, and tasted safe (and delicious).
My boyfriend had a tofu dish which had a kind of salty sauce, so I'm
wondering more about his dish than mine.
Happy eating!
