This is a known bug encountered when running the current version of the
AFS client with an old AFS server (such as the Athena AFS cell runs).
Attempting to lock a file causes the server to appear to go away (since
it doesn't respond to lock requests). Apparently mh-smail locks a file
while sending mail. For this reason, it is planned to update the Athena
AFS cell before 7.0 is released.
