Hi Molly, 

Did this occur on all Athena workstations, or only the ones in W20 marked as testing workstations?  The testers@mit.edu list is intended for reporting problems with new "beta" releases of Athena.

It sounds like Firefox is incorrectly selecting an expired certificate.  You can try clearing the Firefox certificate database by following the instructions at http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/Gp87 (note that this will clear any stored passwords too).   Once you've done that, try obtaining a new certificate and it should work.
