Hm, on my debathena-standard laptop, I think I've seen similar behavior: 
freshly-downloaded PDFs automatically open in xpdf, but double-clicking on 
an entry in the Download Manager brings up a confused dialog that doesn't 
know about file type associations. I don't have either 
debathena-firefox-extension or ubufox; I wonder if this is a bug in 
Ubuntu's firefox package.

(I'm assuming this is on a cluster machine?)
