Hi Sari -
One of the big goals of the Debathena project was to pull the Athena
software base into an environment that was as close to the upstream
behavior as possible - as opposed to older releases of Athena, where
much of the software was heavily customized, if not written from
scratch, creating a heavy maintenance burden on the Athena developers.
For the time being, we feel that respecting the upstream behavior of
displaying the keystroke indicators is the best thing to do to ensure
maintainability of Debathena in the future. Furthermore, we do get
frequent questions from users familiar with Windows or Mac OS X
wondering why nothing happens when they type in their password on Athena
9.4 machines, so it seems better from a usability standpoint.
Thanks for the suggestion, though, and we'll certainly keep this in mind
if we ever revisit the issue.
- Evan
