I believe that X on Ubuntu does things with xauth such that merely setting 
xhost is insufficient; for example, if you log in to your desktop machine 
remotely, setting DISPLAY=:0 won't let you start X applications. You'll 
probably need something like ssh -X that forwards the local connection.

You can also try copying over the file in $XAUTHORITY and setting that 
variable in your remote session, but that's pretty hackish.
