linux afs weirdness

I'm seeing some weird behavior on my linux machine (running 9.4.25).
"tokens" is really slow (seems to take on the order of minutes to run)
ssh-ing to the machine appeared to be hanging. this was fixed by
restarting sshd, but in retrospect may have been caused by underlying
AFS issues.
A couple of days ago I ran "ssh vorp inc" so that I wouldn't be
inc-ing into afs from behind my cable modem, and this failed, becuase
I didn't get tokens, even though there is an aklog (for a bunch of
cells) in my .environment. (Confirmed at the time with ssh vorp
tokens, but that now yields the behavior of tokens runnign really
slowly as described above.)
Note that this is a heavily customized machine so it's possible that
I've done something that's part fo the problem, but I can't think of
what that would be.
