Carter visited my machine, and we looked at /var/athena/menus*
/var/athena/menus.copy had files from 2004, with nothing more
recent than 2004 Aug 23. I had a menus.tar, dated 2005 May 17,
but its contents were the same as I had in my filesystem:
everything was dated in 2004.
We moved aside the file, and rebooted. After the reboot, the
machine had a fresh /var/athena/menus.tar file, and it had
untarred these into /var/athena/menus.copy, and the menus were
the proper 9.4 menus.
I'm not sure why my May 17 menus.tar file had old data, while
Laura's May 17 menus.tar file (on geskekelud) had new data.
Shouldn't it have been automatically updated?
$ ls -lt /var/athena/menus.tar*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 745472 Sep 1 12:30 /var/athena/menus.tar
-rw------- 1 root other 740352 May 17 20:06 /var/athena/menus.tar.old
I now have up-to-date menus. For now, at least.
