I did not reproduce this in a quick test.  One possible explanation is
that /etc/mail/aliases.athena did not exist at update time (or had
otherwise been munged).  The config file script uses the .athena
file to determine whether the file has been changed.

What does /var/athena/update.log contain, relevant to the install of
the MIT-sendmail package?
