This is an odd one- I've already discussed it with sly and jmorzins but
solving it seems elusive... when I run a graphical instance of emacs on
a 9.4 Sun and attempt to display remotely over Tether on my home Linux
machine, I get:

>emacs: Cannot connect to X server bluebox-318.mit.edu:0.0.
>Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
>Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit
>connections from your machine.

My DISPLAY is set correctly, and xhost has been run
appropriately. Other applications run fine on the same display, on the
same connection. It only happens with Sun Athena 9.4 Emacs. Running on
Linux works fine, as does running on a 9.3 Sun.

I've connected both with Athena telnet and ssh- makes no difference. The
display problem doesn't seem to be platform-specific- I see the problem when I
display remotely over Tether on my PowerBook too. Interestingly I don't see
the problem when the display is on campus- i.e. the same PowerBook, or
some other on-campus machine.

I don't know if anyone else really cares, but some of us still
use Tether... I don't know if this happens with off-campus broadband-
I don't have it to test...
