firefox default download to 'desktop'

I just launched firefox for the first time and imported
my settings.
The 'download folder' preference is set to "always save
files to folder <desktop>" instead of prompting for where
to save files. I'm not sure where it thinks 'desktop' is
since clicking 'show folder' doesn't actually show anything,
and I haven't tried to download anything.
This behavior is different than the prompting behavior that
exists under mozilla. Was this an intentional default change?
