failed 9.4 update on opus.mit.edu

opus.mit.edu (in the SIPB office) failed its update to 9.4, but only
barely. It looks like it didn't reboot, as it was left with no X and
wasn't showing tty login screens either. /var/athena/update.log ends
with
- Canna ###########################################
- compat-gcc ###########################################
- athena-fxserver ###########################################
- athena-mingetty ###########################################
- switchdesk-gnome ###########################################
- redhat-config-proc ###########################################
- athena-acme
- ###########################################rpmupdate: Failed to run transactions
*** The update has failed ***
But /etc/athena/version showed

Rebooting seems to have brought it up correctly (afaict), though
/etc/athena/version still doesn't show the update to 9.4.
