A couple of days ago, I saw a failure mode on my laptop (Linux, 9.4.2
at the time) where gnome-settings-daemon would hang at startup. If I
logged out and logged back in, the login would hang on the
activation-client invocation we use to start gnome-settings-daemon.
According to strace, it appeared to be trying to connect to the Unix
domain socket "/tmp/fam-ghudson-" (that's possibly truncated). gdb
indicated that the process was inside libgamin (a FAM implementation),
but didn't have full backtrace information.

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the problem now; my initial guess was
that it had to do with being logged in for long enough that the tmp
cleaner had cleaned something up, but manually removing all the named
sockets in /tmp (except for emacs's) didn't reproduce the problem.
