I saw a different variation on the problem. The gconfd process
hung twice during login. The first hang was in the familiar
place, i.e. in the close() of the .testing.writeability file.
As before, it continued after I attached to it and detached in
gdb. This time, though, it hung again; the "Initializing
settings..." message appeared in the console window in the
interim. Now it was hung in a file read, before any bytes
had been read:

Once again, the process continued normally when I detached from gdb,
and this time the session initialization completed.
