Incidentally, you've only ever seen this on Linux, right? If you ever
see it on Solaris, please make a special note of it. My current
theory based on the gdb behavior is that the bug is deeper than gconfd
(AFS seems a likely culprit), and seeing it happen on Solaris would
mostly trash that theory.
