It sounds like you may have initrd problems; can you boot single user and
recreate the relevant initrd file in /boot?  (Saving the old one would be
most useful.)

Any chance I could come by Thursday morning and have at?  I'd like to
look at the state it's in now, and I expect I can recover it from
whatever state it's in at the same time.
