So, this happened again (note that this was logging in without
customizations). ps -axwww output is at the end of this e-mail.
There were no gconftool-2 processes to strace, and as you can see,
there are 3 gconfd-2 processes, and it looks like dustbuster is
attempting to clean one of them. I have to run to a meeting soon, so
I may attempt to bludgeon this machine into submission so i can get
my work done, but if there are other things I should try in the
future, I can do that.
Attaching to the most recent one shows this:
infinite-loop:~%strace -p 4840
Process 4840 attached - interrupt to quit
gettimeofday({1113919232, 825981}, NULL) = 0
gettimeofday({1113919232, 826158}, NULL) = 0
poll([{fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=12,
events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=4, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=14,
events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}], 5, 13318) = 0
gettimeofday({1113919246, 144915}, NULL) = 0
time(NULL) = 1113919246
time(NULL) = 1113919246
gettimeofday({1113919246, 145462}, NULL) = 0
poll([{fd=8, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=12,

gettimeofday({1113919276, 146352}, NULL) = 0

time(NULL) = 1113919276
gettimeofday({1113919276, 146866}, NULL) = 0
poll(
(which just repeats forever, AFAICT)
Attaching to other 2 gconf processes was quite interesting, although
I had previously attempted to kill those processes, so perhaps I
contaminated something.
