For those of you who have Linux machines in the alpha cluster, the
alpha test will begin some time this evening. The Solaris alpha
release should follow on within a week.
Alpha releases are not guaranteed to be safe for your machine. I
don't expect any major issues this time around on either platform,
though.
The highlights of this release are:
* Linux OS upgraded from Redhat 9 to RHEL 3
* Minor updates to Solaris base OS.
* All release software is now local on Suns, as it is on Linux.
* We run nautilus as part of the standard X startup.
* A bunch of third-party software package updates.
The only new bug I know about right now is that sometimes
"gnome-terminal" comes up in a too-small font, but them subsequent
windows come up with the correct default. I can only get it to happen
for the terminal that comes up in the initial login, and then only
sometimes, so I haven't been able to debug it. If you can figure out
what precisely makes it happen, let me know.
Send bug reports to testers.
