i started to mail a letter to saltzer,
stopped (^Z'd) it while it was bringing
up an/my editor, performed another irrelevant
task, and then went back to the stopped job.

i.e. the effect is to terminate the job
as soon as it restarted. now where is that
messge coming from? the string 'Fatal error'
does not appear in the sources either for vi
nor for (t)csh.
